Twin sisters Sania Hammad and Alizeh Hammad are the founders of Sate Crate. At the time of the founding in 2022, they resided in southeast Kansas and were juniors in high school in southwest Missouri. The area of their residence and schooling is referred to as the Four State Area (southwest Missouri, northwest Arkansas, southeast Kansas, and northeast Oklahoma). According to Economic Research Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (using data from 2018, 2019, and 2020)\u00a0the Four State area ranked high in food insecurity<\/a>. The mean household\u00a0income in this area was lower<\/a>\u00a0than that of the coastal America. These factors probably contributed to somewhat\u00a0lower educational attainment<\/a>\u00a0in this area compared with the coastal states. The late second and the early third decades of the twenty-first century saw a considerable influx of immigrant workers and refugees in this area. For example, there were immigrants from\u00a0Somalia<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Afghanistan<\/a>. The immigrants faced food and economic stresses that were much greater than that of the resident population.<\/p>

Faiqa Kamran, co-founder and president of Sate Crate, is committed to social service and social harmony. She regularly organizes and leads donation drives for Sate Crate that maintain the organization\u2019s ability to attend to the needs of many who are food-insecure in Joplin. As a representative of the Islamic Society of Joplin, she has organized and participated in several inter-faith events that have helped different sections of the community understand, admire, and respect each other. She has personally engaged with recent refugees and immigrants to southwest Missouri to understand their difficulties and has made successful efforts to alleviate them. She continues to volunteer for many charitable organizations in the area. She has done all this despite a busy personal schedule for running her businesses and raising two boys in Joplin, Missouri.<\/p>

The goal of Sate Crate is to help alleviate the stressors related to food that the residents of this area have endured. The Islamic Society of Joplin (ISJ) has partnered with Sate Crate to this end. A free, self-serve food station remains open outside the gates of ISJ 24\/7 from where people can anonymously take whatever they need. Donors can also leave food, but it is accepted only if it is factory packaged, unopened, non-perishable, and unexpired.<\/p>

The organization has been quite successful in achieving its goals, and this work is to continue in perpetuity. Alizeh and Sania remain patrons of the organization, but the chief executive\/s each year is to be one or two high-school senior\/s. Shown above is a staggering number. Using the data gathered by the United States Census Bureau, the United States Department of Agriculture reported\u00a010.5% (13.8 million) of U.S. households<\/a>\u00a0to be food-insecure in 2020.<\/p>

This needs to change and the change needs to begin with one\u2019s neighborhood.<\/p>
